“We are currently waiting on our permits, and once we have those, we will be able to officially open. We will be providing different sushi and Japanese menu options,” owner Truong Vo told What Now Seattle.

“A long time ago, around 1989 or so, I began to work in Japanese food. I am also the owner of another Japanese restaurant, too. Back in 2000, I bought another restaurant in West Seattle that opened in 2001. We were open from 2001 to 2022, but we had to move out since the landlord tore the building down. From then on, I worked for Mio Sushi and eventually bought this new spot.”

“We are doing some renovations to the property, such as removing the carpet and adding floor tile, and replacing or removing certain features to make the space work better for Kamei,” Vo added.

According to a Facebook post from Vanishing Seattle back in 2021, “After 20+ years in the #WestSeattle Junction, Kamei Japanese Restaurant will be closing in early 2022.”

“Their 1924-constructed building, which is also home to Lee’s Asian Restaurant (in business since 2000) and Naked Crepe (former site of West Seattle Cyclery and Sweetie Boutique) is proposed to be demoed & redeveloped into a 7-story building designed by Caron Architecture with 38 apartments, 20 small efficiency dwelling units, retail & parking for 14 vehicles. This will be the 3rd mixed-use Junction #redevelopment for Leon Capelouto, after Capco Plaza (QFC, Petco & Capco Liquors at 42nd & Alaska) and AJ Apartments (42nd & Oregon).”

“Kamei was opened in 2001 by Truong Vo and The Nguyen – a family-owned small business specializing in Japanese cuisine. It’s especially well-known for its tempura, yakisoba, fresh sushi, and secret salad dressing – and also offers teriyaki, sukiyaki, and more,” the post goes on to state.
